Privacy Policy
Effective November 5, 2026
This policy explains what data the Capybook mobile app collects, how we use it, who we share it with, and the choices you have. Capybook is a reading app: we only collect what we need to track your books and run book clubs. We don't show ads, we don't use analytics or tracking tools, and we never sell your data.
1. Who we are
Capybook is made and run by Capybaradev ("we", "us"). Capybaradev is responsible for the personal data processed through the app. For any privacy question, write to capybaradev.support@gmail.com.
2. Data we collect
Data you give us
- Account: your email address and name. If you sign in with Google, Google shares your name and email address with us. If you use a password, it is handled by Firebase Authentication. We never see or store it.
- Profile (optional): profile picture, bio, country, birth date, favorite books and favorite genres.
- Reading activity: the books on your shelf and their status (on the shelf, reading, read), your progress, your ratings, the days you read, your book lists and the lists you save.
- Book improvements: changes you suggest to a book's details (description, publisher, pages, ISBN, publish date) and the Capypoints you earn.
- Book clubs: the clubs you create or join, join requests, votes in polls, and the messages you send in club chats. A club's location is the country and city its owner chooses. It is not taken from your device.
Data collected automatically
- Push notification token: if you allow notifications, a token that identifies your device to Firebase Cloud Messaging, so we can send you club activity and announcements. The app's language is saved with it, so notifications reach you in your language.
- Technical data: like any online service, our servers and providers receive your IP address and basic request information when the app connects to them. We use it only to deliver the service and keep it secure.
Data that stays on your phone
Your reading reminders, Reading Pomodoro settings and a cache of recently loaded data are stored on your device only. They are not sent to us.
Device permissions
- Camera and photos: only when you choose to take or pick a profile picture. Only the picture you choose is uploaded.
- Notifications: for club activity, announcements, reading reminders and Pomodoro alarms. You can turn them off at any time in your phone's settings.
What we don't collect
We don't collect your precise location, contacts, advertising ID, browsing history or any financial information.
3. How we use your data
- To create and secure your account and sign you in.
- To provide the app's features: your shelf, progress, ratings, stats, streaks, lists, Capypoints and book clubs.
- To show your public profile and club messages to other users (see the next section).
- To send the notifications you allowed, such as new messages or a new book in your clubs.
- To review suggested book improvements and keep the book catalog accurate.
- To prevent abuse, fix problems and comply with the law.
We process your data because it is needed to provide the app you asked for, because you gave your consent (for example, for notifications or your profile picture), or because of our legitimate interest in keeping Capybook safe and working well.
4. What other users can see
- Your profile: your name, profile picture, age (calculated from your birth date, which itself is never shown), country, bio, favorite books and genres, and Capypoints.
- Your public book lists. Private lists are visible to you only.
- In book clubs: other members see your name, profile picture and the messages you send. A club's owner sees your join request.
Don't share anything in your profile or in chats that you don't want other users to see.
6. How long we keep data and how to delete it
We keep your data for as long as you have a Capybook account.
You can delete your account at any time in the app, under More > Parameters > Delete account. This permanently deletes:
- your account, sign-in details and profile, including your profile picture;
- your books, progress, ratings, reading days, lists, favorites, suggestions and Capypoints;
- the clubs you own, with their chats, and your memberships, join requests and votes in other clubs.
Some things are not removed right away:
- Messages you sent in clubs owned by someone else stay in that club's chat until the chat is deleted, which happens when the club moves to a new book or is deleted.
- Approved improvements to a book's details stay in the book catalog, without your name.
- Copies in our providers' backups are erased within 30 days.
You can also ask us to delete your account and data by writing to capybaradev.support@gmail.com from the email address of your account. We'll do it within 30 days. See Delete your account for the steps.
7. Security
All data between the app and our services travels over encrypted connections (HTTPS). Access to your data requires you to be signed in, and our servers check your identity on every request. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to protect your data and will tell you, as the law requires, if a breach affects you.
8. Children
Capybook is for people aged 13 and older. We don't knowingly collect data from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has created an account, contact us and we'll delete it.
9. Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to:
- access the personal data we hold about you and get a copy of it;
- correct it (you can edit most of it yourself in Edit Profile);
- delete it (see section 6);
- withdraw your consent, for example by turning off notifications or removing your profile picture;
- object to or limit some uses of your data;
- complain to your local data protection authority.
To use any of these rights, write to capybaradev.support@gmail.com. We'll answer within 30 days.
10. Where your data is stored
Our providers may store and process your data in countries other than yours, including the United States and Canada. When that happens, we rely on our providers' safeguards, such as standard contractual clauses, to protect your data as this policy describes.
11. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as Capybook changes. We'll post the new version on this page with a new effective date, and for important changes we'll also let you know in the app.
